Maxed Out:

Ridiculous Things I have learned:
-          Credit Card companies hold checks so that your late, over-limit or interest fees rise incredibly to where you start with having to pay about 80 dollars before you deal with interest which can be up to 29.8%
-          Credit card companies target college kids and also people who have filed for bankruptcy at least once to determine who they want to get their cards because the other people will be able to pay their bills because they have steady jobs and college students do not- if they fall into debt they are pretty much…fucked… and people who have filed for bankruptcy may do it again and have trouble managing money (more late fees and over-limit charges)
-          If you cut out the people that are deepest in trouble or who continually fall into debt  then the credit card companies wouldn’t make nearly enough money
-          A good number of the population who has credit card has had mistakes on their credit report
-          Credit card companies assume that the card holder is the criminal not that there is a flaw in the computer
-          Consumers think that they have privacy- but the constitution does not give you a right to privacy from a non-government individuals or companies- only a right to privacy from the government
-          There is no grand plan in congress for an end to this- they have no plans down the road for this
-          President Bush’s top campaign contributor was the credit card company MBNA who also wrote the bill that made it harder for middle class people to be able to file bankruptcy that Bush backed
-           We no longer have a Social Security Fund because the federal government has spent it all…mostly Bush…
- For many the only way out of the debt is death- so many commit suicide

Isabel, I just don’t even understand what I am supposed to do these days.
Let me let out some concerns:

I just learned that the capital of Afghanistan is Kabul
I just learned that the President of Afghanistan is Hamid Karzai
I can’t spell Afghanistan
NATO means North Atlantic Treaty Organization
The difference between Al Quada and the Taliban and the ethnic origin of the Taliban
That the opium trade has been a huge issue in Afghanistan
The people will actually say on junior retreat, “Midgets scare me” and have other people join in
The USA’s food industry is completely corrupt and it is suffocating our country like a snake
George Bush was supported financially in his campaign by a credit card company who then wrote a bill that would make it harder for middle class people to declare bankruptcy (this was written by the credit card company that targets poor people who cannot pay off their debt so that they will fall into debt with the credit card companies- because they will have no option but to run on credit)
That we do not have a social security fund after…2005? Because Bush withdrew 800 million or was it billion which completely ran dry the fund
That I am learning about gender, race and class discrimination while health care, the food industry, debt and war I am completely ignorant to- we learn about the nineteenth century but we leave our parents to know for us what is going on in politics- essentially that it is not our responsibility
That there are so many injustices and corruptions that I will never know about and yet support unknowingly in my lifetime
The fact that our government is influenced by money a lot of the time along with companies
That there are shows on TV like fear factor while on another channel they are talking about science and things that are really important about the world we live in and yet Fear Factor is watched by more Americans (probably)
That my religion is looked upon as being “on the fence” or “goes with the flow” or “is something people are forced into because of their parents”

Basically I watched FOOD INC

and another movie about credit card debt that I am in the middle of.
Then there is world hunger. That can be solved. Ridiculous.
People kill themselves because of credit card debt.
